And I'm at least a week and a half away from getting my new brake valve for the replumbing of the duel brake system! I have the rear replumbed with all new tubing (nasty stuff came off), new wheel cylinders & shoes installed all the way around and new front rubber hoses installed at the back plates. The two lines from the master cylinder are routed along the bulkhead but will need final cutting and flaring at the valve end. I still need to plumb the whole front circuit from the valve forward. This is my second car hydrolic plumbing job within a year (Just did the TR3's) On the positive side, the rebuilt swivel balls are mounted with brakes & freewheels as well. The new raised breather is on the front (old one was stripped and a source of water entry) Having the correct size race for the front axle bearing did wonders for the fit. New lower front shock bushings have replaced badly worn ones. New hammerite coating on the air cleaner and engine breathers. New tie rod end boots are installed. New wiper arms & blades are installed. I still haven't unpacked the Green Rover from the Suds triangle run. If I can just get the car plumbed and fluid in in time, all I need to do is throw some food in the car and fill the water containers. Hmmm. I wouldn't say they're gutless. I've been passed by some on several occassions when I was doing about 70 -75; I'd estimate they hold 90 mph quite nicely thank you. I've also spent about an hour driving one with my brother with the thought of potential purchase (my brother that is) and it seemed to have plenty of power even on the steeper portions of the hills in the east bay area. I fail to see why the service should be particularly bad compared to the D90s, they're basically the same vehicle aren't they? Moreover a new RR is more like 55K (there's a dealer demo for sale for that up here). Of course, I'm sure the RR is more capable off road. As far as feasible diesel transplants for the Series vehicles go I'm only making slow progress and haven't checked with the UK yet. Tom Rowe (LRO-Digest) says he will be posting on an installation he performed. Apparently this is one of the Perkins (don't recall the model off hand) which is pretty much a straight drop in. However, I've been given to understand that clearance is reduced due to a lower oil pan and heavy front springs are needed. The Peugeot turbo diesels are also rumored to be straight fits (yeah, right just what I need a piece of French auto machinery!) as are the VM diesels from Italy (I've never heard of these - am I ignorant or what?). As expected people say all the TDis are too large to get into a Series vehicle. I wonder if Turner has a rebuild of the 2.25 diesel that might be respectible. Since the diesel option isn't looking too feasible at the moment I'm starting to drift back to thinking about a Turner rebuilt 2.25 with an overdrive (that should supposedly get me just over 100 hp and better highway gearing while maintaining good offroad ratios). I am referring to the bill maloney remark on the big list > (I saw it this am) Seems to me like a very good idea. > > John Hess, PhD This is another subject that has been recycled several times. Here's what I had to say in May of '93, except I ran it through my Lucas spell checker. ... When I first installed the OD the oil was "pumping" out of the transfer case into the OD. This was discovered when I found 90 weight oil sprayed on the rear after runs on the freeway. The OD was getting full and pushing oil out the vent hole. I installed a drain tube from the OD to the transfer case by just replacing the oil level check plugs with hose barbs connected with a length of 3/8" fuel hose. This was in place for about a year and several adventures. On one of the desert trips after a long run on the hyway I smelled HOT 90 weight, so I stopped to check it out. The dip stick was missing from the OD and it was low on oil. I filled it up, made a plug for the hole and continued the trip. The oil had run into the transfer... down the tube, due to driving up and down steep hills in hot temps. The dip stick must have been blown out, as it was a snug fit with an "o" ring. This occurrence made me think that the oil wasn't pumping but was being forced by air pressure from the transfer to the OD. I removed the "drain tube" and installed a vent tube between the OD and the transfer case and the atmosphere. This has been on for three years and now the oil in each section stays there. The vent tube is up high and I can install a cap for very deep wading.
