It was very nice. Eric and Brigid have a wonderful home in the foothills and much open space around them. It is very quiet...well except for all that racket the birds make. We didn't do anything that might result in LR repair and still had a nice tour of the country side. We ended up with a pretty small group; 5 Land Rovers (unless you consider the Cope Roadster, which did not run with the herd, in the total count). The participants were: the Hessmobile, with the total Hess crew Walt Swain's 109 with Walt and his dad Rod aboard Nick Baggerly (sorry about messing up your name?) with his very nice 88 and a cast of many The Cope's very clean 109 with the NADA 6 and some really special badges that hafta be seen to really be appreciated. and Gooey, the Weasel and me. Actually the crowd was larger than that because of assorted innocent bystanders that got themselves involved in LR activities. The Copes seem to provide a hospice for those ravaged by the hectic life in the bay area. Very relaxing up there! Of course the shady lawn, pool, hot tub, and beer infested refrigerator (right there on the deck!) helped. A variety of dogs had a grand time running about. Saturday night was the BBQ and star watch. We all had a grand time and the Weasel made several new friends. Perhaps Walt will post some details of the effort to save the Yupoids from the killer snow bank. Uh Yupoids in a Jeep that is. Thanks Brigid and Eric....let's do that some more. Gerry & the Weasel PS....I'm really glad I finally got a CB, sorry I held out so long. It was a great to be able to keep up with the goings-on throughout the convoy. ------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 1995 11:37:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Tom Spoto Subject: Series three Gear box I switched transmissions between the daily driver and the parts (future project) Rovers and find that the one that came out of the daily driver has in addition to the internal problems that necessitated the swap, a cracked and welded case. I don't know for sure but I think the case may no longer be square and a solid rebuildable unit, so does anyone have a series III gearbox case they would be willing to part with for a reasonable amount what ever that might be. tia Regards Tom Spoto 67 truck cab, 72 Safari, 72 parts, all 88's ------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 1995 12:14:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Jim Russell Subject: Re: Coping with adversity Damn, I am really sorry I missed out on this one. I think I'd have liked it a lot. Still, I also happen to like Seattle a lot so I guess it is not an unreasonable trade. Glad all had a good time and that nothing got too terribly broken. But, of course, next is the trip to Paradise and I am really looking forward to that too -- even if I do plan to be very, very conservative because I can't break stuff that would preclude my driving up to the Portland meet and then a bit further for a week or two in Seattle. Date: Mon, 3 Jul 95 15:26:37 PDT Cc: mendo_recce@owens.ridgecrest.ca.us In another note, we were talking about some of the other carbs that fit out beasts. I have a 1964 Ford Commet (144 ci) carb that is a direct drop in for a Zenith. The mounting hole spacing is identical. The throat is slightly larger in diameter, but not much. I know that Holley also made some Econo- misers or whatever that were replacements for these back in the early days. (actually, that's why the guy gave me his old carb). They also used to make a small Holley that fit the Ford small six around 1960 era... Seemed to work fairly well on the '64 Rover... Have fun! Swain | wcswain@wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us > Davis Community Network | > Davis, California | 1967 109 Series IIA Safari SW > Walt- A few years ago, I had to go to the Ref on the '73. The notice posted at that time said that the diesel had to be the same year or newer than my vehicle and be brought back in to the ref for a number plate. Now, if your vehicle is '65 or older, I'm not sure why you would bother getting this number plate unless you planned on selling the vehicle. Kelly Minnick ------------------------------------ From: Kelly Minnick Subject: Re: More trash about carbs Date: Mon, 3 Jul 95 15:47:02 PDT Granny- The main LRO list had some talk about Zeniths coming stock (new) with junk in the bottom of the bowls... Sounds like your idle air-bleed passage is plugged. Sometimes this can bee cleaned out by putting that little red tube off the carb cleaner can down the idle air screw hole and giving it a blast. This is usually only a temporary fix, though. Another suggestion is that you are leaking air somewhere. This would give low CO, but high hydrocarbons. Check it out... Kelly Minnick ------------------------------------ From: Kelly Minnick Subject: OverDrives Date: Mon, 3 Jul 95 16:22:35 PDT Have a friend who just put a Fairey overdrive in his '67 88". Since putting the OD in, he can now no longer get to 1st and hard to get to third... I don't know if he pushed his main shaft too far forward or what. Any ideas? I've never put in an OD, so I'm not much help. I've rebuilt 3 or 4 boxes, but the only things I could come up with is this: 1. Output shaft nut not tight (Main shaft nut) 2. Bent shift forks from force of installing OD Any ideas? Kelly Minnick ------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 1995 17:17:00 -0700 From: jjbpears@ix.netcom.com (Jeremy Bartlett) Subject: Cole Offroad Update - a real LR salesman Just an update for those of you potentially interested in getting together with some disco and rr types actually interested in offroading through Cole European. I was just in today getting some warranty work done (leaking front crankshaft seal - yup its a Land Rover), and there's a new salesman. Eric McKay, who is a Series LR owner and LROA member. He's in the small group that goes out into the desert with "Scotty", Brad et al. Anyone on line know him? Apparently he ran into you last Saturday Morgan? He was at the Hayward meet. He owns a 5-door blue 109 with a Koenig PTO winch (which wasn't at the Hayward meet). Anyway the upshot is that the prospects for a reasonable get together look good. Incredible, a LR salesman who knows LRs! Oh, yeah, he's not on the net. By the way, re. some of the LRO postings on D90 sales ending in '96. Perhaps not exactly apparently. The story is that they may be back after a year. The model is going to be shifted slightly. The base model will be with a full roll cage and rear seats. This is the "station wagon" version of the LRO digest posting. The price will remain the same as the current base model without the full roll cage. The reason is ---- taxes! Surprise. It seems that by installing the rear seats LR is now allowed to get around the high (25%) tariff imposed on the vehicle (to protect Jeep). So this will ding the value of used D90s a bit for all you hopefuls. Probably not significantly though. Cheers, Jeremy ------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 1995 19:10:04 -0700 From: jfhess@ucdavis.edu (john hess) Subject: Cope-ing quite nicely. A Thank You! To everyone who bailed from the copes rover get together- Thanks. Just kidding. The turnout was down from previous Joe Lucas events but it seems that everyone had something going on. Morgan, glad to hear about your bottom end work and Jeremy, if someone like me could figure out there was no fuel pump in the gas flow, I don't think anyone else needed the PS. Eric and Brigid are wonderful people who actually have me believing they appreciate vistors at their place as much as we (the hess group, small tho' it is) appreciate the peace and quiet. No the hessmobile didn't go out and crawl trails with walt and gerry, but we did our own things. Saturday was the day for off roading, a drive by back roads to columbia. That drive should be on a later outing but we must leave more time to look around columbia. Saturady eve, everyone cooked his dinner and then some of the guests took a dunk in the hot tub, watching the stars. Even little old davis has enough light pollution to screw up seeing the vastness of the stars and milky way. Even later, we stood around a "security light" (looked like a street light to me) on the front of erics yard and waited for glimpses of bats, flying in to eat bugs. If you recall my posts or rovers north article, katherine likes bats; some people like to see deer, others watch birds, my wife thinks bats are really cool. Therefore, when in caves or out in strange habitats we have to ask about bats. This also explains why we have to go back to austin texas, we missed the bats! From her perspective, sat evening made the whole trip worthwhile. Which is good for me because she was not happy carrying out old dog Liberty up a slippery marble rock path because I didn't want to force Libby to swim the cave/creek with me. (libby will do anything I say but she is getting old. I saw eveidence of this at alpine lake when chris stole the show with her fantastic dives into the water. Used to be libby launching herself 6 feet out, holding a pose and hitting the water with a splash.) Anyway, sunday we drove up hiway 4 to alpine lake to possibly rendevous with walt or gerry. From there, we drove back down the mountain until we hit natural bridges- a place where coyote creek goes through a cave and emerges ~75 yards later. If it sounds cool to you, it's much better in person. We walked and then swam through formations you only see when going through caves. The finish is through a large opening that drips continually, like a very low flow shower head that is 20 feet wide. The walls are incredible, the roof is low at the end and all in all it is also worth a second trip. Alex used an inner tube but I swam the creek with eric and my chesapeake christmas. (we brought both dogs this trip). So we finished up sunday with erics mother and step-dad, learning more about his(erics) days in africa and having a great time. Later we hot tub'd then hit the Dormobile for a nice long sleep. This trip we discovered that a double sized air mattress is a big plus for the lower bed of the DM. It is now on the list of essential camping equipment! Monday we got a tour of the property from eric, seeing the grinding rocks from which the property gets its name-"Grinding Rock Ranch". Thanks again to eric and brigid (who had to leave this morning BEFORE we were up) we had a great weekend. john f hess phd (wow, really?) jfhess@ucdavis.edu from home via modem Land- -Rover, Sunbeam Tiger and Mazda owner! ------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 1995 22:34:53 -0700 From: gpool@pacific.pacific.net (Granville B.
