Come join us. As for distance, it's a straight shot up Eye 5. Just past Sacramento, before the airport, take the 99/70 exit. 99 gets you here via Chico, and 70 via Oroville. We usually take 70. Hope you can make it. Probably a fair figure for the Series vehicles. For those in RRs or Ds maybe this is a 1.5 hour leg. cheers, Jeremy ------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 95 09:28:17 -0700 From: avery@wfoc.usbm.gov (Avery) Subject: Granville, Work or play? Hey, Granny, did you make it to Paradise or did you have to work? Personally, I brought a lot of work home form the office, and promptly left most of it in a pile. I'm beginning to see that owning a series LR(or is it L-R?) is sorta like creating your own money pit. Without getting Randi home yet, I just got back from the hardware and Costco stores...let's see, one case Castrol 20W-50 oil, one gallon "oil- eater", two new flourescent shop lights, new wrenches (no, not wenches!) a quick call to BP fro rebuild kits for clutch cylinders, ad nasuem. Nothing like saving somey by doing it yourself! I also need new footwell assemblies on both sides, door posts and rails, splash guards, etc. think I whill have to get a group order together up here. Right off, will be ordring the oil filter adaptor andthe weber carb adaptor (with pcv - thanks Kelly!). Won't have Randi ready for Portland, so will probably drive down with John Benham and add to the beer and ice donations. Maybe we can bring down some brew from the local microbrewries. C U then ... Jim, from berkeley, in a series rover, I would plan on near 1.5 hours to davis. however, that's not the full story. You can either continue on 80 toward sacramento, then continue on 80 toward reno (ie don't go on business 80 toward downtown). Well before you get to reno, take the eye 5 north off ramp. You then have a couple miles to th 70/99 north junction. Alternatively, just before you get to davis, you take 113 north to woodland. Then, in a true example of stupid highway planning, you must get off 113, drive a block and get on eye 5 going SOUTH. drive south on 5 over the sacramento river, past the airport, till you see the 70/99 junction. go north on 70/99. I would bet that either route is within seconds of each other. Neither has traffic concerns. however, going north on 113 and trying to get to eye 5 I don't like. There is one sign that says I5 next right and then the exit sign says main st. If you're not careful, you find yourself merging with 5 and going North. For this reason alone, I say drive through davis, bypass sac with 80 and make for 70/99 by using I5 north off of 80. Either way, your looking at 20-25 minutes till your heading north. One and a half or two to Davis, two to Paradise, and one and a half or so to base camp. Sounds to be very much a fairly late arrival even if all goes well -- probably midnight or so and maybe later. Thanks to all for the info. It helps. Lots of coffee!!!!! Jim Russell ==== jrussell@netcom.com (Seattle -- San Francisco) ------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 1995 13:38:19 -0700 From: jjbpears@ix.netcom.com (Jeremy Bartlett) Subject: High Speed Aerodynamics or EFI?? (D90/RR) - trivial questions OK here's a really important question (yes I'm being sarcastic) :) : On my D90 (US version) I've noticed that when my speedometer gets into the 85-90mph range (actual speed 80-85mph) the vehicle occasionally experiences intermittent, but irregular, mild "hesitation". This lasts for about 1 to 1.5 seconds per occurrence. Time between occurrences may range from 15 seconds to a couple of minutes. Weather (temperature/wind etc.) seems irrelevant as I've observed this in several conditions (and altitudes). I'm particularly UNCONCERNED about this given the rarity of the conditions under which its observed BUT was wondering what the cause might be. My prime candidate is aerodynamic effects. The boundary layer on these beasts seems to pretty much disappear around 50 mph (judging by raindrops on the windscreen), so I doubt there's anything happening with this. However, I was wondering if there might be significant rear vortex collapse (or front layer build up?) causing this. Any thoughts? The thought that interests me most is whether this hesitation is related to EFI performance. I don't know enough about EFI to say if at speeds beyond those regularly anticipated for the vehicle such a hesitation effect would appear. At first guess I'd have said no since the rpm isn't out of range compared to other speeds. However, maybe the fuel delivery can't always keep pace at the rate of usage the system is probably undergoing at these speeds --- err sorry at this speedometer reading :). Anybody any comments on whether EFI could be causing this? Any RR owners experienced anything similar? Any other D90 owners? [Sorry-I'm assuming the Series folks don't reach such reckless (terminal?) velocities.] Ignorant minds are intrigued :) Cheers, Jeremy Bartlett D90 '94 SIIA 109SW '65 ------------------------------------ From: BobandSueB@aol.com Date: Sun, 23 Jul 1995 17:55:29 -0400 Cc: mendo_recce@owens.ridgecrest.ca.us ------------------------------------ Subject: Paradise to Inskip to Base Camp Jim, Now that I look back on my notes from the pre-run (hard to read as I was writing as Bob was driving), it looks like it took us 40 minutes to get from our house to Inskip. We live at the bottom of town off Pearson road. >From Inskip, it is 10 miles of dirt road (for some pavement when you turn on to Philbrook Rd.). Traveling at 15 or 20 mps, it is probably only 30-45 minutes minutes to Lake Philbrook. We'll keep a candle burning in the window (of our motorhome) for you!
