Friday I spent >10 hours rebuilding the bottom of my engine. I replaced all the main (7) and rod (6) bearings and installed a high volume oil pump. I was extremely lucky to have the use of a full garage and a lift! This helps big time, it is really a drag to lay on the pavement for this long rolling bearing out and into the crank journals. Thanks much to Vance and his buddy Kevin, without whom I'd be S.O.L. The results? Well, rod #5 could be ratlled up and down significantly by hand, presumably the knocking I heard on start-up. Bearing inspection showed that the journal had worn through the outer coating and into the copper stuff in patches. Yup, pretty worn out but the crank was in o.k. shape so I just slapped some new ones in. The high volume pump was a reluctant addition but I figure when chugging off road is when oil pressure is critical. So, now I have good oil pressure (60psi at rev/25-30psi at idle) and no knock on startup! Being that this engine is only 50,000 miles old since a full rebuild I suspect driving off-road with rpm too low contributed to the wear. Good thing I caught it now, before big damage occured. It sounds like the Paradise Lost Rallye will be the biggest yet. We had, I believe, 17 rovers at the Joe Lucas Mendocino Rallye I. Apparently, folks just can't stand hearing about all the fun we have. Cheerio! I'd be going through Rover withdrawal except that I have more than a few parts to tinker with and have been spotting them left and right. In fact there is a topless RHD 109 parked a couple of blocks away and in wearing my LR hat I have had three or four people as about them. Like you, I'm unable to Cope what with my being in Seattle but looking forward to Paridise. See you all there! However, Davis is only 2 hours away from Paradise, so once you are settled, you'll have to come up and we'll give you a personal tour of the High Lakes!
