Meter lights there have been on even for weekends for many years now. Avoid LA... and Mission Viejo. I have made the Bay Area to San Diego trek some 40 or 50 times. At night the fastest way is I-5 direct through LA. Zing, straight through to San Diego. But with *any* traffic the I-15 route is faster. A bit longer in miles, but faster. I take I-5 to I-210. I-210 through Pasadena toward Pomona. Head east where I-210 meets I-10. Take the I-10 (the only busy section) to I-15 south out in Ontario. It looks circuitous, but if you are heading over to SG or to San Diego it should be a lot faster. I am heading down (hopefully) on Sunday... He looks at the frog and decides to prove the frog wrong, puts his other club away, and grabs a 9 iron. Boom! he hits it 10 inches from the cup. He is shocked. He says to the frog, "Wow that's amazing. You must be a lucky frog, eh?" The frog reply's "Ribbit. Lucky frog." The man decides to take the frog with him to the next hole. Several years ago I traveled into Tijuana. The moment I crossed the boarder the lack of emissions equipment on most vehicles reminded me of downtown Los Angeles during the 1970s. I am grateful and quite frankly, amazed that the emissions laws have been able to noticeably clean up the air despite the increase in vehicles and population California has endured. Progress has certainly been made in this area and, although many complain, I am a supporter of such progress. I wouldn't classify myself as an environmentalist but, for the most part I believe in California's emissions programs. They seem sensible to me but if they are truly sensible, the state will properly investigate SB-42 and conclude that vehicles 25 years or older really are a small portion of the vehicle fleet (and getting smaller). Stock emissions equipment is expensive and is difficult to obtain and my vehicles are well-maintained and infrequently operated, just like the bill states. [mendo note: Ok Ok, so I exaggerated a bit on the "well maintained" part.] I own three old 1960's Land Rovers which always pass the smog test but one bit the dust after a smog technician made some goofy adjustments (took me days before I could get it to run proper again). Anyway, thanks for your support and let me know if I can do anything further to endorse SB-42. Nick Baggarly 428 University Avenue Los Gatos, CA 95030 p.s. If SB-42 passes, how soon until it goes into effect? ---------------------------------------------------------- This afternoon I received this reply from the Senator. I like this guy. Dear Mr. Baggarly: Thank you for your letter and expression of support for SB 42 which would provide some measure of relief to classic car owners. Others who may wish to communicate their support to me and my colleagues in the Legislature can do so via the Internet or letters to members' offices in the State Capitol. I believe that the relatively modest number of vehicles older than 25 years and the operating characteristics of such vehicles provide a firm basis for the smog check exemption proposed in my legislation. If passed, SB 42 will take effect January 1, 1998. As I have stated on numerous occasions, I will endeavor to make the smog check program fair, effective and convenient to the public.
