Can we get them into the country? I'm not a great deal of help on detailed rules, but I do have one word of advice: Parts. In the end this is probably the easiest way to get it in - several parts at a time. I didn't look into the finer points of importation when I brought the Turner in since it is technically just a rebuild of an engine previously brought into the US. I probably should have. I do know however, that there's a mighty impressive looking form associated with newer (post 65??, pre 25yr?) engines. Customs didn't ask me about engine type, but did inquire about age. The US Customs declaration form is marked "Turner 2.25 Petrol Engine", so they'd have some info. right at hand; however this doesn't seem to mean much to them. After all "Turner" is surely not on a US Customs file. I don't know if the 200 TDi has been "certified" (EPA) for importation or not - probably not. I'd imagine that even though it's a diesel it'll need to have the appropriate agency approvals. The quickest way to find out (not necessarily simple) is probably to call up customs and ask. Just tell them your looking into the possibility and want to know the legal necessities/possibilities. cheers, Jeremy ------------------------------------ From: john hess Date: Sun, 16 Feb 1997 08:50:31 -0700 Subject: rover for sale from the sac bee land rover '67 88 tropical top, clean very good $6500 916-333-4338 cheers, jordan, email me if you want to talk rovers. My summer trips to Montana and Idaho are starting to gell, but I'd like some input from him. I'll probably be staying out of the Pioneer Mountains for this season and instead will concentrate on the MT/ID border areas. We'll still start at Rock Creek east of Missoula because it would be nice to visit the 10,000 y.o. archeological site, but then I want to shoot over Skalhako Pass toward Darby, MT. From there, along the Divide between MT and ID and spend a few nights at Painted Rocks Recreation Area. There's a neat loop from there down to North Fork and Salmon, ID, along Long Tom Ridge. This is really pretty country. There are a number of hot springs in the area, and the fly fishing is supposed to be pretty good. This is mostly high country so the vistas are spectacular. I have most of the 7.5' maps for the MT side, and many of the 15" ID maps. I'm collecting the necessary USFS 1/2"=1 mile maps now. There are a lot of campgrounds available, but I don't know how much they're utilized. So back country camping for most of the trip is what I am planning for. So much country, so little time... If anyone else is interested and has any preferences on where you want to go, what you want to see (e.g. Bozeman and the Museum of the Northern Rockies for dinosaur buffs like me, or Ketchum, ID, and moviestars in bars scene), let me know. Dates for the long (up to two week trip) are still the first two weeks in August. The shorter one week trip along the McGruder Corrider between the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the Frank Church Wilderness is set for the second week in Sept. Cool nights, no one else around (post-tourist, pre-hunting season) make the second one a lot of fun. Any questions? Oh, I've got about three landy owners from eastern WA/ northern ID committed to the second trip already. The more the merrier! ----- Dale W. One thing nobody has mentioned here at all, that really would concern me about the 200TDi is that it has a timing belt opposed to a timing chain. I have a Honda sitting here that I blew the belt on and the engine might be toast. Maybe a diesel doesn't have the problem with the belt going on it like the petrol engines do (anybody know ???????). I like the fact that my rangie has a timing chain on it though, and it seems that a 200TDi would be a giant step backwards for me as gas would be much harder to find and then I would probably have to worry about yet another major expense if the timing belt went...;-) I hadn't realized that before, but there was an article in LRW on replacing the belt that I was browsing through at Barnes and Noble last night. OK, I'll confess, I have been looking for the "titty issue" for months, after Steve Hedke got me all prep'd for it, but haven't been able to find one. I don't subscribe or buy LRW, but I'm beginning to get bummed that I just may have missed that issue. I guess everyone flocked to the newstand and bought them out or something...;-) Oh sure, I could probably find various mags at Nick's house all stacked up (no pun intended...) but it wouldn't be the same as those LRW "titties". I picked one up from BP while in LA this last week but even though the parts manual shows a nut to remove to get the spring off, my starter doesn't seem to want to cooperate. No real nut, just a termination that's round and not going to be something to grab onto. To make matters worse, I pulled the guts out of the case and now am faced with trying to get the guts back in the case while springs are holding the electrical brushes in the way. Seems like its time to recce the west side of Mendo in preparation for the "event". How about picking a weekend then we can discuss wether to go from east to west or visa versa. Given the number of washouts in the east, it seems like this might be worthwhile. How about toward the end of the month so creek crossings are feasible? Of course we could always come in from the west and possibly include some time at Cow Mtn.
