Do you already own the radio which you are planning to install? If not, you may be better off having the radio you purchase installed by a "car stereo" shop . And... I would expect the car stereo company to run NEW wire for the unit. (the existing range rover stereo wiring is horrible and will give the sound system a muddy or "low range" sound. The better the wiring, the better the sound quality. Buying a NEW deck and having it installed by professionals is the BEST way to kill two birds with one stone. If your old deck is a Clarion, then I would presume your Range Rover is a model year 87 ---> 89. I believe they switched to Pioneer in 90. If your Rover is above 91 then odds are you have ADS speakers. Which are in my oppinion (and many others) the FINEST car speakers ever made. These speakers are "limited" by the Rovers cheap (18 gague) speaker wire and any investment in thicker gague wiring would improve sound quality ten fold. The stock stereo system in a Range rover has 2 10watt Pioneer amplifiers for the front/rear speakers (amps located in rear of truck where CD changer or your jack should be) These amps have CRAZY wiring. I estimate at least 8 wires for each amplifier (for what, I don't know). Off the shelf decks, don't have the same wiring configuration to be compatible with these amps further complicate the installation since the AMP wires cross over to the head unit / deck at the wiring harness giving you the appearance of having 6 wires (from the Off the shelf stereo) which attach to about 16 or more wires in the stock Range Rover wiring harness. Just one more reason to "rewire" and have the stereo guys do it. If you already own the head unit, you're in for some fun since the colorings used by Land Rover don't usually match those used by Stereo manufacturers. I'm not sure if an aftermarket wiring harness is available so it will be splice and dice til you get things right. > The OEM Clarion in my RR just died so I am putting in a new radio. > > 1. If not I might be able to locate the number for the tech at Clarion that gave me the Clarion info. I also have the schematic for the 1990 model if any of this stuff seems to match your system. Let me know and I can mail/fax you a copy I had replaced the non CD model radio with an Alpine CD unit. I cut the wires between the radio and the plug and then attached the radio to the original plug. It made it easy to remove and install. Unfortunately, someone stole that unit and the half of the plug that was attached to it. That plug is UNAVAILABLE anywhere. Not only that but it necessitated me decifering all the color codes for both sides of the harness. All, I was driving south from Willits, California, on U.S. Highway 101, this afternoon. In a curving section (giving me little warning) there suddenly appeared, heading north, a civilian truck and trailer of some sort, hauling two military vehicles, both of which looked brand new. Both appeared to have U.S. military markings on solid-colored olive-drab paint. One was a Hum-Vee and the other a big Unimog, dopplekabin style. Before I could even begin to digest this startling apparition, another load suddenly appeared, followed by yet another. The second load had another Mog and some interesting-looking smaller vehicle which was unidentifiable by me. The third had yet another Mog and another Hum-Vee. At least the last Mog had a full rollcage over the entire cab. All the drayage was civilian; all the vehicles were likewise military-looking, all looking brand new. What the hell? My glimpse of these was so brief that I was most frustrated. I came close to turning around and chasing them but was in a county car, working, with not enough time. Still, if I'd had a camera with me, I might have done it anyway. Any ideas what this remarkable collection may have been about? Is the U.S. military buying Mogs? Why on civilian conveyances? They're a pretty posh premium place but took really good care of me when I had a Clarion installed in the '89 RR two weeks ago. The days when I found stereo installation fun and challenging are gone. This time I just wanted someone else to do it. They mentioned that it took a while to figure out the wiring. I'll ask Roy to see if they have it in their records. A couple points to keep in mind when replacing your stereo: 1. The stereo positioning in the RR is different than in most cars. Roy originall put an Eclipse unit in but we had to change it out for a Clarion because the dot-matrix display couldn't be seen. Get a good display. You'll probably have to go LCD. I bought the best one and it's still harder to see than the oem stereo. 2. If you're willing to do some cutting, a six disk changer fits most excellently underneath the drivers seat. 3. Roy made some nifty brackets which are used to mount tweeters angled in the front upper speaker grills. In the bottom of these doors he retro-fitted good quality speakers of the same size, using the existing grills. In the rear, he also replaced the speakers with the same size. They provide rear fill and not much more. One day we'll add an amp and a 10" woofer in a custom box that sits above the spare tire. Hi Puzzled (and Flustered, too), Don't know about the Mog question (although the US Military does buy German for use in Germany, maybe elsewhere too? I expect that the military is constantly evaluating equipment from myriad and unusual sources. Maybe next time you'll see some of those Land Rover Sharks that were rumored to be in the hands of the Army. The drayage question is one of responding (at least in part) to the present political truth, which holds that the private sector can do anything the public sector can do, better and cheaper. When it comes to being the low bidder to haul equipment from point A to point B, perhaps it is true. I see a lot of military contract haulage on I-80 and I-5. But before I invest in a radio, I need to find out why my battery goes dead on a sporadic basis when the vehicle is left for a while. It's in the shop today, so maybe they've got it resolved.
