Mark,

I've read many reports about your Disco, how impressive the
modifications are. Would you please do us all the favor and post just
what all the modifications are on your Discovery? I, for one, would love
to know... I have many dreams for my '87 RR as well, just no budget money!

Thanks, Dave Brown '87 RR (and others...)

Subject: RE: Portland Registration. Address?

It's not necessary, but doing so:
-- saves time in the line to get into the field (pre-registered cars,
just pick up a packet and zip on through)
-- allows you to have a "preprinted" (cardboard) dash plaque instead of
a chinsy hand written one
-- allows you to have a photo of your beloved (rover, that is) in the
programme (though that deadline may have already passed)
-- save a few bucks ( to use on rover parts, or beer, of course :-)

Subject: Fork Fire

Yesterday, Bob Bernard asked,

>Where the heck is the forks fire burning relating to our Mendo campsites?
>I mean is it near deer valley?

And I replied:

It's actually being called the fork fire and I'm puzzled as to why that
name. No, I don't think it's after the Rice Fork. The maps I saw early on
geve the appearance that the fire was mostly south and east of the Middle
Creek Campground, downstream along Middle Creek and along the east bank, up
the ridge to the east and so on. Mostly not an area that we have covered
(although much of it in the National Forest and with some potential for
future recces).

But of late--alas!--it's apparently moved more to the north and the maps
seem to indicate that it's burned the whole Deer Valley area and much of the
land to the east, probably by now reaching into the Rice Fork watershed and
beyond.

It's destroying a beautiful area. I try to remind myself, though, that this
occurs naturally from time to time (whether or not this one is of natural
causes) and is part of the life-cycle of these western forest ecosystems.
In the nature of our summer-drought climate patterns, I'm very much afraid.

I'm surely hoping that this cooling trend will help. Was down in Sonoma
County for the weekend and it was all overcast with smoke. Cars everywhere
were all covered with ash. Ironically worse than where I live which I was
shocked to determine is only 15 miles from the west edge of the fire!

TODAY'S UPDATE:

By midnight last night, this dreadful conflagration (which started near the
Middle Creek Campground used by the ORV set) had consumed 70,000 acres and
reached easterly nearly to the Indian Valley Reservoir (about to Hough
Springs). Federal troops from Colorado are being brought in to help battle
the blaze. This is one of the worst wildfires in the short history of the
Redwood Empire.

It looks as if an awful lot of our favorite recce region, the place where
this list was born, is being reduced to charred rubble.

Yet be of good cheer,

Granny

Subject: What?! Portland ABFM already!?

Yikes! I just realized that the Portland meet is the weekend after
next!!! This leaves me only one weekend to scrub off the bugs I
collected from the trip to Colorado.

Just to appear a little more organized, and to help associate the e-mail
name to the face & vehicle, I'll compile a list of net.attendees for
distribution prior to the meet. If you send me your:

Name & e-mail if it doesn't closely resemble your name
	Vehicle type
	Vehicle color
	License Plate No. & state
Any unique accessories or characteristics (of you or your vehicle)

I'll compile the info and send a summary this Friday and an update next
Wednesday. I wouldn't want to miss anyone and I'm glad I'm not going to
be the only Disco on the field this year!

Happy Trails!

Hi John,

Just a thought on the Goodyears. If you do get them, make sure they have
the heavy duty side walls. I am replacing the Goodyears on my RR with
Cooper CTDs. Got the first pair in June, planning on the second pair
soon. The Goodyear side walls took a beating on the last Mojave Desert
run, hasted by Ben in on of his last Desert Rat activities. Lost one
tire to a split, and could see some damage in another; both rears.
Fronts are OK, but I'd guess that was a matter of luck.

BTW, where are you doing the 109 renovation? I've lost track of your
wanderings (again).

Subject: End of the Steering Box debate

I just bought a new STC2845 from BritPac, so I'll be kindly sending the
EuroParts rebuilt steering box back. I was treated well by Mohammed, and I
don't think he meant to rip me off. However, I expect the part I order at
the price I ordered it at (or less), and EuroParts did not give me that.
I'll be installing the box this weekend.

Jory, I remember well the initial Europarts disasterous internet marketing.
However, they did express regret, and stopped promptly. I think it was
more a lack of understanding that motivated them, not a malace. I was
willing to give them a second chance.

Not too likeley they get a third chance, though...

Well, it was really only your first chance since it sounds like their
first mistake was just ignorance on using the net.

Lets see. I would say its hard to miss but yesterday Bruce Boner sat for 45
minutes near the end of a small parking lot looking for my car that was
already parked at the other end of the parking lot, about 100 yards away.

I gues the obvious things are a Dormobile top, Manetec snorkle, right side
access door for the 5 gal propane tank, right rear fuel filler from a
Defender high capacity pickup, military front & rear bumperettes, Vancouver
winch, diamond plate lower skirts, a pair of fuel inlets right behind the
left door, side hinged lift gate, Discovery steel wheels, You now a normal
stock Land Rover...

I'll be easy to recognize. I come with a blond Irish Wolfhound.
