All U.S. Spec Land Rovers built after 1989 have a diagnostic read out on the ECU. My '89 has the Lucas 14CU ECU so I don't have the read out. The '90s got the new 14CUX box with the LEDs. The '96 models have the OBD II with MIL lights and even more read outs. I am not a big fan of the particular implementation of environmental law. However, I just made an appointment with a referee (for your parents' old citroen Stan ;) and while the wait is indeed 1.5 months, the DMV gave me a temp registration good for 2 moths on account of the wait for the referee (ie it's not "ruled off the road"). Yes, yes, yes! And the solution (at least in my case) was so simple it was a real forehead slapper. After ten or fifteen minutes of highway miles, the late Annabelle's brakes would go red hot, smoke, stink, and loose most of their stopping power. Scared that I was in for the big $$ one, I limped her back to my mechanic and left her a few days until he could look at it. What was the problem, you ask? Well, with all of the tools and electronics available to the modern mechanic, he diagnosed the problem. It was - are you ready for this - the driver's side under-dash trim panel that had come loose and was sagging, ever so slightly, on the top of the brake pedal arm. With all of the sound-deadening material, the panel actually has some weight - enough weight to close the brake pads enough to generate heat after a few highway miles (remember, as the roter expanded with the heat, the condition worsened quickly), but not enough to be noticable in normal driving. The cost? N/C Anthony R. Sanna SACO Foods, Inc. I turned our van around and told my wife to call EMS and rural fire at the State Park HQ. I then ran up to the vehicle owner who was right next to the truck and asked "Is everyone out of there". He was in shock as well you would expect. He said, "no, he still had stuff on...".I said "People?". Then he calmed and said that everyone was out. I said that we needed to get away from the vehicle...that generally they don't explode but that it could. My only other vehicle fire experience was as a fire guard in 1976. That vehicle was consumed but experts told me at the time that vehicles rarely explode. We moved away and I told the owner to stay down road and stop all traffic. I ran up road to stop traffic. At about that time the first of 4 explosions took place. The first two appeared to be in the engine compartment. The third explosion blew out the drivers side gas tank. Modern tanks are pressurized so when this blew, the flames shot out over 50 feet across the road for a sustained 10 seconds. A Korean War veteran at the scene said the "explosion" was identical to a flame thrower. The 4th explosion blew out the passenger side tank and shot flame into the road bank. I critiqued the fire with my rural fire friends. Here are some of their comments. It ain't 1976. Vehicle fires are their most dangerous fires. Pressure bumpers blow front and back. Pressure tanks blow sideways. You don't know what they are hauling. Think of the traffic on the National Forest. These folks are camping. They have white gas, they have propane...you name it. Modern synthetic materials add to the risk. One whiff of smoke from one of these fires could permanently damage your lungs. This particular vehicle had two fully loaded side tanks. Gas had leaked out of the full tanks and had somehow ignited. Firefighters always approach a burning vehicle from a 45 degree angle because of the pressure bumpers blowing forward and the gas tanks sideways. They wear full bunkers and have breathing apparatus. Leave it to trained personnel to fight this type of fire. No one was hurt or injured on this fire. My rural fire friends said that made it a success. Its the best you can hope for.
