Best bet is to call junk yards, or in your case you might want to just get a new ECU from someone like British Pacific (britpac@aol.com). Since your in the Phillipines it would cost you some $$$s in phone charges to possibly not find one, but my guess is that you can find one if you have enough time and patience. Another thought I've long had is to carry a very small off-road motorcycle across the rear of your beast. For many years I had my eye to acquire a Honda Trail 70 for just that reason. A sooper-dooper spare tyre, if you will. The Trail 70 because I figured it to be just about the biggest bike that would more or less fit across the back without overhanging the sides significantly. But Trail 70s are very hard to come by (out of production for many years) and even those would add an awful lot of extra weight to the back. Ah, well... As to the reason for using 4th instead of some other gear? I can only guess. The transfer case is splash lubed any time the output shaft turns, assuming it has adequate oil. I've spent a fair amount of time in this area but I can't recall anything specific regarding off-roading. There are plenty of old (dusty) logging roads to the east of 101. Most of these roads are more or less open but are dotted with intimidating signs. It is possible to get all the way over to Happy Camp or Hoopa from there without touching asphalt but be prepared for some rough country. The roads are mostly very easy but some of the creek crossing are pretty serious. As I recall one of the better roads to get you into the hinterlands is a bit north of the Klamath River (about five miles just at the north edge of a marshy willow area on the west side of the road. Much of my time here was between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM and that makes it much more interesting :-) but there were some surprising encounters with sedans loaded with drunks. This is to be avoided. yeah well see...I was out there looking for owls. This area has been logged extensively and the replacement of the old growth with new "tree farms" has allowed the intrusion of Barred Owls, an eastern species. The concern is that they will displace the Spotted Owls...and then all the logger will hafta change their owl recipes. :-) It is beautiful up there. I recommend plenty of exploration. Don't forget to take your GPS and your mountain bike. Most of the folks working in the National Forests have a real interest in responsible management and protection of the forests. They can get a little wierd, though, as a result of being caught between the multiple rocks of public and private demands on the resources and the hard places of official policies and the law.
